Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreens: Do You Know the Difference?

Sunscreen should be a part of everyone’s daily routine, as it can protect from skin cancers, early aging spots and sunburns. The two types of sunscreen are mineral (physical) and chemical.

Mineral sunscreens, with active mineral ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are a wonderful option because they:

  • Deflect UV light.
  • Work on surface of skin.
  • Start protecting skin immediately.
  • Can be applied on top of other skin-care products.

However, they also:

  • Wear off easily.
  • Need frequent reapplication, as compared to chemical sunscreens.

Chemical sunscreens, which account for 96% of all sunscreens used in the United States, are banned in Hawaii due to damage to coral reefs. Still, chemical sunscreens have many benefits:

  • Absorption of UV light into skin, protecting from within.
  • Convenience for wearing under makeup, because they don’t leave residue on the skin.
  • Longer protection from UV light.

But, like mineral sunscreens, they have their negatives:

  • Irritation of sensitive or acne-prone skin.
  • Longer pre-sun wait time: they take approximately 30 minutes to go into effect.

Any sunscreen is better than none, but each person should take the time to find the sunscreen that is perfect for them. The Floating Lotus carries many sunscreens, and we’re happy to help you find the one that is right for you!
